Footnote.com Adds to Its Civil War Collection by Launching the Interactive

1860 US Census

PreviousNext Footnote.com announced the addition of the 1860 US Census to their Civil War Collection. This project was a joint effort with FamilySearch, who provided the images to the 1860 Census.  From those images, Footnote created a index enabling visitors to simply type in a name and search the millions of names contained in this collection.

As the largest online collection of original Civil War documents, this new addition to Footnote.com provides a snapshot of America before the bloodiest war in its history. The 1860 US Census reveals many details about individuals at that time. What was their occupation? Where were they born? What was their marital status? Did they attend school? Could they read or write? Was your ancestor insane, idiotic, or a convict? The 1860 US Census will let you know.

“Is the 1860 US Census already on the internet? Yes,” says Russ Wilding, CEO of Footnote.com. “But what makes the census different on Footnote is that these documents become interactive.”

Footnote.com has developed tools that enable visitors not only to find someone in the census, but also to enrich the records by adding photos, linking related documents, and contributing insights to any name on the record. “Now they’re not merely names on a document,” explains Russ Wilding. “They become people as the contributions start to tell a story about that person.”

This past March, Footnote.com released a similar project using the same technology with an interactive version of the Vietnam War Memorial. For each name on the Wall, a visitor can view military service information, attached photos and comments. The success of the project is overwhelming as priceless contributions are added to the Wall. Footnote expects similar results with the launch of the 1860 US Census.

At Footnote.com, it’s more than just looking at a historical document. History becomes a living subject on Footnote.com as documents from archives come together for the first time on the Internet. Visitors to Footnote.com can add their own contributions and upload their own shoeboxes of information. Letters, documents, and photos from the past create a view of history that few have seen before.

Trinity University (TX) Selects Innovative for Complete Digital Library Service

Trinity University's Elizabeth Huth Coates Library, a recipient of the ACRL's Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, has selected a suite of Innovative technology products for complete digital library service. In addition to the Millennium ILS, the Library selected Electronic Resource Management, Research Pro federated-search, and the Encore discovery services platform.

"We appreciate Innovative for their continuing development of Millennium and look forward to exploring how Electronic Resource Management will help us administer our electronic resources and make them available to students and faculty through the online catalog," says Chris Nolan, Assistant University Librarian and Professor.

In 2007, the Library was recognized by ACRL for, among other things, its creative programs and willingness to try new things. Nolan continues: "The ACRL award reflects on our focus on being creative to stay relevant and improve student learning. We're always willing to try something new and Encore appealed to staff as another positive change. Our students don't like complicated search forms such as those they find on subscription databases. They like a simpler process and want a contemporary look and feel. We think that Encore is quite attractive to the 'Google Generation.'"

Swets Finds the Last Piece of its Standardization Puzzle in Migration Partnership with Anubex

Swets, a leading subscription services company, and Anubex, leader in automated application modernization solutions, are pleased to announce a partnership in which Anubex will perform the cross-platform migration of an enterprise application of Swets. The project will involve the conversion, migration, and modernization of the last back end application, developed with IDMS technology.

Using the tools of Anubex, the company will migrate an extensive number of lines of code, residing in batch and interactive programs and scripts, and a substantial amount of production data. The application will be migrated to a new architecture consisting of a combination of COBOL and Java, running on Linux, that enables a more easy integration with other applications running on the same architecture. The firm's data, currently stored in a pre-relational network model will be migrated to a fully relational model, implemented on DB2 UDB. Character-based screens will be migrated to rich Java interfaces where they will be maintained after the migration in Eclipse.

Anubex will collaborate with the IT team from Swets to complete the migration, testing, and taking live of the applications. The migration is slated for completion in the summer of 2009 and will be conducted according to SOAR, the snapshot-oriented migration process perfected by Anubex since 1993. To completely eliminate risk, business disruption and code freeze periods, the applications will be migrated and tested iteratively throughout the project and taken live in one single step.

With the migration being supported by the same in-house staff that maintain and operate the application today, Swets will leverage technical and functional expertise toward the target platform. Swets has extensive in-house expertise in Java and Linux already in place. Worldwide, the application in question is accessed by over twenty Swets offices, located in several countries throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

Belgian Anubex has developed specific tools to improve the precision and speed with which IDMS applications can be migrated to modern open systems. "This project represents our largest contract to date in the Netherlands," said Louis Heymans, Managing Director of Anubex. "We see renewed interest among members of shrinking user-bases of technologies like IDMS to modernize their applications. By choosing a migration solution, Swets will gain a competitive edge by leveraging its past investment in human and electronic capital while reaping the benefits of a completely refreshed and up-to-date enterprise architecture."

Tutor.com wins Spring 2008 Parents' Choice Foundation Gold Award

Leader in On Demand Homework Help and Tutoring Services Receives Highest Recognition as an Online Education Tool

Tutor.com, the online tutoring company, has been chosen as one of Parents' Choice Foundation's Gold Award Recipients and the sole winner in the Online Software category. The company is being recognized for its ability to engage students ages 10-18 in a fun and innovative manner that supplements their education.

Tutor.com has delivered more than 3 million one-on-one tutoring sessions in a safe and secure online classroom to students across the United States.

"For some parents, the Internet still represents an environment over which they have little control over their children's activities. That's why at Tutor.com we take the responsibility to deliver safe and effective tutoring that parents can trust. We are thrilled to be recognized by Parents' Choice Foundation," says Tutor.com CEO, George Cigale.

To ensure a safe learning environment for every student, Tutor.com employs strict quality control over tutoring sessions. Each tutor must pass an extensive application and certification process that includes a thorough third-party background check and educational screening, before they can begin tutoring. And, every Tutor.com session is reviewed for quality control and professionalism. Parents can also review transcripts of their student's sessions at any time.

Parents' Choice Foundation, established in 1978, is the oldest independent surveyor of educational products for children. Those who are on the reviewers' panel include teachers, parents, scientists, and librarians, as well as kids. Paying special attention to children's media that help children learn, Parents' Choice Foundation reviews hundreds of products throughout the year and only the top 1%-2% receive Gold recognition.

"Our committees recognized Tutor.com with a Parents' Choice Gold Award, in part, for the commitment to providing students and parents with an effective and safe online tutoring service," says Claire S. Greene, President, Parents' Choice Foundation.

Solution to Green Computing

Did you know that every PC that runs Windows XP's sleep mode can escalate up to 5 billion dollars per year in energy costs? Did you also know that there also 20 million personal computers in the United States alone that end up becoming obsolete and become hazardous environmental waste? And sadly, only a very small percentage consisting of 3.3 million are recycled or donated.

Due to the fact that technology is constantly growing by leaps and bounds on a frequent basis and replacing outdated systems in the process, is there anything that can be done with an obsolete computer rather than disposing of it? How will we ever work to achieve a cleaner planet if everyone continues to take energy consumption and electronics disposal for granted?

Fortunately, there is a green computing solution to this issue. Userful has created a dream green machine that gives anyone the ability to turn a standard PC system into a multi-computer platform. In other words, you can transform one PC into ten.

How is this done? Userful constructs its systems with multiple video card slots that allows you to add up to 10 different monitors, and multiple USB ports for keyboard and mouse functionality. Powered by Userful Desktop, you have the ability to use multiple computers on an easy to use, tightly secured network. It's ideal for a variety of public computing avenues such as libraries, Internet cafes, airports, schools and hotels.

Userful's mission is to achieve the three R's for its consumers: Reduce environmental impact of computing, Reusability of existing computers, even ones that are considered to be obsolete, and Return of investment which allows the consumers to make money off their Userful Desktop.

Userful Corporation is quickly becoming the worldwide leader for green computing.
