Lied Library Using an intensive series of interactive programming
meetings, the LEO A DALY team programmed and prepared schematic design and
design development for this new library. A series of plans, models, and computer animations helped
define this user-friendly, 302,000-SF "architecture of
interaction," which features cutting-edge information technologies and
the energy-saving use of natural daylight in a desert environment. This library includes a dynamic, five-story north-lit
atrium; 100-seat, 24-hour coffee shop; automated storage and retrieval
system; information commons with 100 interactive computer stations,
collaborative study booths, and small and large classrooms; and 2,500 reader
stations conveniently clustered throughout the library book stack collection. A primary objective of
the Using a series of
interactive meetings with university leaders and community members, our team,
with local firm Welles Pugsley, designed the
library so all four sides would be clearly seen. The design placed importance
on library activity and visibility, creating an added layer of campus
connectivity and energy. The building blends
technology and sustainability, housing 2.3 million volumes. It uses an
Automated Storage and Retrieval System that saves nearly 100,000 SF, reducing
construction and operational costs. The library harmonizes with its desert
environment by harvesting natural daylight to deflect heat, offsetting energy
costs. Computerized simulations of daylight conditions were used to maximize
natural light. The exterior skin
includes low-e insulated glass with perforated aluminum sun louvers and
deflectors. Zinc-alloy cladding on "floating" vertical walls and
its barrel-vaulted roof deflect heat and contribute to its landmark status. The interiors provide
intuitive wayfinding. The core encourages social
and technological interaction. As visitors move through the collection toward
exterior walls, the atmosphere becomes more private. The stacks are used as
filters for sound, providing solitude. “This is a magnificent building, beautiful, functional, and we
were so pleased with our partnership
with LEO A DALY. The Lied Library has become the heart and soul of our campus, a central gathering spot and an
important campus resource for our students,
faculty, and staff, and the community.” Carol C. Harter, President, UNLV Leo A Daly | www.leoadaly.com |
