Scanning Oversized Documents

Oversized materials often get shelved away from related
materials. Converting these materials to digital format allows them to
coexist with memos, letters, and book pages.
Scanning such large and sometimes fragile materials calls for special
equipment and trained operators. Northern Micrographics has been scanning and

Marinette County Public Library
had oversized atlases in its collection that were wearing out due to overuse.
Northern Micrographics scanned each page of the atlases at high resolution
and reprinted the pages on acid free, thirty-four inch paper.
The resulting images and reprints reduced the need for patrons to always examine
the original source documents.
Additionally, they are archived in the ANSI standard vault at Northern
Micrographics and can be reproduced from the CDs if anything should happen to
the prints or the image files.
Working with microforms since the 1940’s and digital imagery since the early
1980’s, Northern Micrographics understands the need for securing the
permanence of the data. Proper storage and vigilance are necessary with any
media.
